Peter Egan speaks out on Barclays’ links to animal cruelty
Blog
Actor and long-standing animal advocate Peter Egan is using his voice to shine a light on the hidden cruelty behind everyday banking and is calling on Barclays to stop funding factory farming.
In a video message, Peter highlights the bank’s financial ties to JBS, the world’s largest factory farming company, and the devastating impact this has on millions of animals every day.
Many people in the UK bank with Barclays without realising where their money is invested. As Peter explains, Barclays is the single biggest funder of JBS, a global meat giant responsible for slaughtering more than 13 million animals every single day.
These animals, including chickens, cows, pigs and lambs, are turned into widely sold products such as Richmond sausages and Fridge Raiders. But behind those familiar brands lies a system of cruel factory farming that causes immense suffering.
As Peter puts it, these are not numbers on a balance sheet. They are individual animals who feel pain and emotion, just like the pets we share our homes with.
What investigations have shown
Undercover investigations have repeatedly exposed the conditions animals are kept in within JBS supply chains. Many are confined so tightly they can barely move or turn around. Others are prevented from expressing even the most basic natural behaviours.
This suffering is not visible to Barclays customers. It’s not highlighted in branches or on customer websites but the funding that enables this unimaginable cruelty continues.
Using influence to demand accountability
Peter’s message cuts to the heart of the issue. Banks have power. They choose which industries to support and which harms to walk away from.
Barclays is making an active decision to back cruelty rather than supporting a shift towards more humane, sustainable farming by backing JBS.
Barclays must end its financial relationship with JBS and Peter is urging the public to stand with us and demand better.
Banks have a choice for what they fund. Barclays is choosing cruelty.
Why voices like this matter
When well-known and trusted figures speak out, it helps bring hidden issues into the open and raise awareness. Peter’s support helps more people understand how animal suffering is woven into everyday systems and how change is possible when institutions are held to account.

Speak up against cruelty
On JBS farms, animals endure horrific conditions. They’re crammed into overcrowded, filthy sheds, subjected to painful procedures without any pain relief, and pumped full of antibiotics just to keep them alive. Many never see daylight or feel fresh air. This is factory farming at its absolute worst, and Barclays is paying for it.
