Behind many tourist attractions, wild animals are living controlled and unnatural lives.

To meet demand for rides, shows and close‑contact experiences, animals are confined, trained and handled in ways that cause long‑term physical and psychological harm.

This includes:

  • Monkeys stolen from the wild and taken from their mothers, then subjected to harsh training so they can be forced to “dance” or perform for tourists.
  • Elephants controlled through fear and used for rides, shows and bathing experiences that deny their natural behaviour and social needs.
  • Dolphins confined to tanks far smaller than their natural range and made to perform repetitive, unnatural tricks for human entertainment.
  • Tigers and lions bred in captivity for tourist attractions, including cub handling and photo opportunities, often spending their whole lives confined.

What visitors see is often designed to look enjoyable, while the suffering behind these attractions remains hidden.

That’s why we work to tackle cruelty at its root and support ethical, higher‑welfare alternatives within the tourism industry.

Why monthly support matters

Cruel animal entertainment doesn’t stop overnight, and animals can be made to suffer for years.

Monthly donations enable us to take sustained action. They help us keep rescuing and protecting animals, challenging harmful tourism practices, and working with governments and industry to build a better world for animals.

Your regular support provides the long‑term protection animals urgently need.

How World Animal Protection helps end tourism cruelty

World Animal Protection works to protect animals used in tourism by tackling both immediate suffering and the systems that allow it to continue.

Your support helps us to:

  • Rescue and rehabilitate animals saved from abusive tourist entertainment
  • Transform venues into true, high-welfare sanctuaries
  • Challenge travel companies and online platforms promoting cruel wildlife attractions
  • Work with governments to strengthen laws and enforcement
  • Educate tourists so demand for animal cruelty declines

This approach protects animals today and helps prevent future suffering.

We are a global organisation with decades of experience ending animal cruelty, working with partners, governments and communities worldwide to drive lasting change.

When you start a monthly donation, you’ll join a growing movement of people determined to change the world for animals.
