Donate nowLong-tailed macaques are the most traded and exploited primates in Indonesia. Naturally highly intelligent and sociable, this species of monkey is now endangered because of loss of habitat, and exploitation for medical science or street entertainment.
In the wild, a baby macaque would stay with its mother for at least two years. But these monkeys are taken from the wild as infants, their mothers shot - and from just 8 months old, these bewildered young monkeys are subjected to the cruellest training regime imaginable.
Starved, hanged, beaten and chained by the neck, they are forced to wear masks, dress up as dolls and stand on two legs for painful amounts of time as they are trained to do dance steps, ride bicycles and perform tricks for shoppers and tourists on the streets.
It’s horrible, isn’t it? And it has a terrible impact on these very young, intelligent animals, who’ve been proven to suffer extreme stress
Working with our local partner Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), we have just successfully rescued 31 young macaques from a cruel ‘dance training village’. Since 2014 over 400 monkeys have been rescued, rehabilitated, and returned to the wild.
