Statement: Animal Welfare Bill 2018

News

Our statement on the UK government's announcement of a draft bill recognising animal sentience in UK law after Brexit.

We welcome the Government’s new bill requiring that UK law recognises animals as "sentient beings" after Brexit. This is a strong commitment from the Government that will go far in helping the UK to retain its top ranking on our Animal Protection Index (API).

In particular, we are pleased to see that cultural exemptions have been removed, whereas under EU law these exemptions have allowed certain animals to continue to suffer pain and fear. World Animal Protection will continue to do all it can to stop culture being used as an excuse for animal torture wherever it occurs.

World Animal Protection looks forward to working with the Government to make sure that this law is applied to all animals, whether they are on farms, in our homes, or in the wild, to ensure the UK becomes a true world leader on animal welfare.
