Animal welfare successes in July
News
You helped us support animal welfare around the world in July 2022.
Your ongoing support made all these incredible achievements for animals possible. Thank you.
Let’s dive into what you made happen this July ⬇️
🐯 You promoted wildlife-friendly traditional medicine in China
Together with Chunyu Doctor, a leading internet medical care company, our China team launched an online campaign to educate and mobilise 20,000 consumers to become wildlife-friendly. The campaign shows the cruelty wild animals who are used for medicine experience. It encourages consumers to sign the wildlife-friendly pledge, committing not to purchase wildlife products and to support herbal substitutes.
🐘 You spoke out against elephant exploitation in Thailand
Our Thai team organised the forum, "How to protect elephants from exploitation and abuse”, with the Save Elephant Foundation and the Standing Committee on Land, Natural Resources, and Environment of Thailand. This event supports the Thai Elephant Bill that we helped to develop and that entered the legislative process recently. The Thai Parliament and the Department of Provincial Administration are verifying the necessary documents.
🐮 You exposed how a major Dutch pension fund contributes to animal suffering
A new report from our Dutch team exposes how ABP, the largest pension fund in the Netherlands and even Europe, invests €8 billion in companies that either (financially) support, or are directly involved in, factory farming. This causes the destruction of natural habitats, climate change, and large-scale animal suffering. The Dutch government's policy is to promote better animal welfare, circular agriculture, and a reduction in meat consumption. ABP’s investments in the livestock industry are at odds with this policy.
🐨 You promoted wildlife-friendly encounters to families in Australia
Our Australia and New Zealand team put on a free ‘Wildlife Kids Corner’ event at the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets on the Gold Coast as a fun, interactive, and educational stall. Children and families learned about the importance of visiting dolphins and koalas in the wild instead of in captivity. There was koala and dolphin themed face painting, activity books, and a free wildlife themed instant Polaroid picture opportunity to capture the moment.
🐜🍴 You helped to protect anteaters affected by the fires in Brazil
Cecília, a young anteater, is the first winner of the Wild Animal Unique Personality Award, created in memory of Audrey Mealia. Cecília is currently living at the Instituto Tamanduá, which will be receiving a one-off prize of $10,000 USD. This prize will go towards improving the infrastructure at the rehabilitation facility and to buy a new vehicle. This will help the team to monitor the rehabilitated anteaters when they are released back into the wild.
