Remembering Jane Goodall and her lifelong mission to protect animals

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jane Goodall. She was a pioneering primatologist, conservationist and humanitarian who transformed how the world understands animals.

Jane began her groundbreaking research in 1960 in what is now Tanzania, where she observed wild chimpanzees using tools, showing emotions and forming complex social bonds. Her work challenged the belief that humans were entirely separate from other animals.

What are some of the things that Jane Goodall achieved?

  • Groundbreaking science: Her research in Gombe Stream National Park revealed chimpanzees as intelligent, social beings.

  • Global conservation movement: She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977, which now operates worldwide to protect animals, restore habitat and support local communities.

  • Youth leadership: She launched Roots & Shoots, a global programme inspiring young people in nearly 100 countries to protect animals, people and the planet.

Why is Jane Goodall important today?

Jane Goodall showed that science and compassion can work together. She proved animals are sentient, emotional beings, not resources to be exploited. Her voice became a rallying cry for urgent action on climate change, biodiversity loss and animal welfare.

Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved.

What can we learn from Jane Goodall’s legacy?

Her life teaches us:

  • Every action counts: She reminded us that even small, local actions add up to global change.

  • Animals deserve respect: From chimpanzees to farmed animals, they are individuals with lives worth protecting.

  • Communities must be part of the solution: Conservation only works when people are empowered to protect the nature around them.

How can we honour Jane Goodall’s legacy?

We believe the best way to honour Jane’s life is through action. That means:

  • Challenging factory farming and wildlife exploitation.

  • Demanding government policies that protect animals and the environment.

  • Empowering young people to create a compassionate future.
