Animal welfare successes this February

News

Despite February being a short month, we had some great successes for animals around the world. Here are some examples of how you helped.

Torch You asked for an end to dolphin entertainment in Thailand

A theme park called Safari World in Bangkok held an event to celebrate Children’s Day, which exploited dolphins as part of a performance. Our Thai team called on the government and private sector to stop the cruel exploitation of dolphins, and to improve laws and policies to protect wildlife.

Torch 30,000 of you demanded to end fur farming in the EU.

Despite Denmark going back on its ban on mink-fur production, there are promising signs the industry could be banned within the EU. World Animal Protection managed to acquire 30,000 signatures from supporters who support The Fur Free Europe campaign, which were handed to the Minister of Agriculture in 2022. Now The Fur Free Europe campaign has had over 1.4 million EU citizens sign and support. We are hopeful the EU Commission will include a ban in animal welfare legislation which is currently under revision.

Torch You pressured the Thai Prime Minister to pass a bill ending cruelty against elephants

Since there had been no word on the submitted Elephant Bill in Thailand, which aims to improve the welfare of captive elephants, our Thai office gathered supporters and volunteers to apply further pressure on the current Prime Minister before he leaves office in March. The efforts have received attention, and a representative has addressed the situation, assuring the commitment will be upheld.

Torch You helped Cecilia and Darlan the anteaters to go back to nature

Cecilia and Darlan were rescued during the Brazil fires. After recovering in a World Animal Protection funded rehabilitation centre, the pair have been recently released back into the wild. They are both settling into their freedom and exploring their new surroundings.

Torch You brought attention to climate change and biodiversity protection in China

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the UK – China Ambassadorial Relationship, the British Embassy held an event in, Hainan China. World Animal Protection was the only NGO to be invited, and the Director of our China office, Zhonghua Zhao gave a speech to bring attention to the relationship between human health and biodiversity, emphasising the need to protect wildlife and their natural habitats.

Torch You helped to shine a light on the plight of pangolins

February 18th marks World Pangolin Day, a day to recognise the world’s most trafficked mammal. To make an impact, the Africa team hosted a hybrid webinar targeting journalists and social media influencers to discuss the threats facing pangolins and the actions needed to protect them. The presenters delivered an impactful presentation, and due to social media coverage, it became a trending topic in both Uganda and Kenya.
