Meet the London Marathon runners fully fuelled by plants
Blog
On World Vegan Day, let's take a look at plant-based heroes who have combined their love for animals with one of the greatest fitness challenges of all time – the London Marathon!
World Vegan Day, celebrated on November 1st, is all about kindness – to animals, the planet, and ourselves. Whether you’re vegan, curious, or simply looking to make more conscious choices, it’s the perfect moment to get inspired by our plant-based runners.
Richard

Richard went vegetarian in his early 20s and has been vegan for more than six years now. This year, at the age of 62, he ran the London Marathon for World Animal Protection – his first ever marathon – finishing in an incredible 3 hours and 24 minutes!
Richard enjoys early morning runs, listening to the birdsong instead of music – showing his deep appreciation for and connection to nature.
“I just can't bear the thought of the millions of animals suffering on factory farms. That is what motivated me to go vegan. And for me, being vegan is a real joy! At 63, I feel better than ever, and I love knowing that I'm helping the animals and doing something good for my health and the planet at the same time. I hope by running the marathon and showing that it is possible, I can inspire others to give veganism a try – you're never too old to make a positive change!”
Joe

Joe ran the London Marathon for World Animal Protection this year, raising more than £2,200! He went vegan when he got his first dog, Bruno, who quickly became his best friend.
“Bruno made me realise that it’s not possible to draw a meaningful moral distinction between Bruno’s life and the lives of the billions of animals we exploit for human gain. I’ve now switched to a completely vegan lifestyle and become an active participant in the animal rights movement.”
Joe also hosts a plant-based BBQ every year to introduce his friends and family to vegan food!
Sean

Sean has completed the London Marathon twice for World Animal Protection, and he’s currently preparing to run again for us next year! Not only is Sean a dedicated fundraiser, he’s also a committed vegan – and has been for 30 years!
“It was certainly a challenge 30 years ago. People didn’t understand the word ‘vegan’ at all and the term ‘plant-based’ didn’t exist. No foods were labelled vegan, there was no bold allergen information on products, no supermarket meat or dairy alternatives, no vegan options in restaurants, and not even the internet for information… We are spoilt for choice today!”
Animals are suffering on factory farms all over the world, with 80% of farmed animals in the UK being factory-farmed. Our Confined in Cruelty report highlights the horrifying reality of UK farming and exposes how the lowest standard farming methods are increasing.
A shift towards more plant-based protein is an essential component in building a more humane and sustainable food system – and a kinder world for animals.
