Monkey Freedom Project: Meet Jono
Blog
Panjul - previously known as Johnny - was taken to a dancing monkey training centre when he was just one years old.
Age: Approximately 4 years old
Rescue location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Time in captivity: 2.5 years
From that moment, his life became a routine of forced performances. Masked, chained, and made to drag a cart for entertainment, he was violently pulled into tricks for the amusement of passers-by. He spent his days performing, and his nights in confinement.
Despite all he endured, Panjul is proving to be a gentle and curious young macaque. Since his arrival at the JAAN sanctuary, he’s been adapting remarkably well. He shows no signs of trauma-induced behaviour and is fascinated by the older monkeys in nearby enclosures - often seeking their attention and protection over the younger ones. It’s a smart survival instinct, and a sign that he’s already thinking socially.
Medically, Panjul arrived severely dehydrated, underweight, and suffering from serious dental issues. His baby teeth had been clipped, leaving painful open root canals and causing a large abscess in his cheek. Thanks to JAAN’s expert veterinary team, he’s now receiving antibiotics, pain relief, and regular check-ups. Fortunately, as a juvenile, he may not need surgery - his baby teeth will fall out, making way for healthy adult teeth, if infection is kept under control.
He’s steadily gaining weight, enjoying a varied and nutritious diet, and absolutely loves corn, banana, and leafy greens. He also delights in enrichment toys - especially his peanut butter-filled kong and frozen fruit treats.
Panjul’s path to recovery is already well underway. His social nature and sharp instincts suggest he’ll be one of the easier monkeys to integrate when the time comes for group socialisation. With continued care and support, he has a strong future ahead - one filled with connection, curiosity, and, at last, freedom.
