Monkey Freedom Project: Meet Meli

Blog

Meli spent four long years performing on the streets - dressed in masks and made to carry weights in staged “gym” routines.

Age: Approximately 6 years old
Rescue location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Time in captivity: 4 years

Her performances were driven by fear, not choice, and like so many ex-dancing monkeys, the signs of trauma linger even now.

Timid and easily frightened, Meli arrived at the sanctuary shy and withdrawn. She would freeze at the sound of unfamiliar noise or movement, and her instinct was always to hide. But from the very beginning, she found comfort in one thing - her best friend, Amel. The two were rescued together and remain inseparable. Meli spends most of her time grooming Amel or basking in the sun by her side.

Though she was in poor condition on arrival - dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from parasites - Meli is showing promising signs of recovery. She’s the only monkey in the group who doesn't need dental surgery, and she’s now receiving a specialised diet, parasite treatment, and daily enrichment to help her regain strength and confidence.

While she still startles easily, Meli is slowly beginning to open up. She’s curious about the monkeys in nearby cages and has shown interest in forming new connections. Her quiet, peaceful nature means she’ll be introduced to new social groups slowly starting with other gentle individuals and with Amel by her side. They’ll take their first steps toward life in a troop at their own pace.

Thanks to your support, Meli is finally safe, supported, and beginning to trust the world around her again. A brighter, freer future is finally within reach.
