Monkey Freedom Project: Meet Amel
Blog
Amel spent most of her life performing on the streets. Forced to pull a cart and ride a wooden bike for the entertainment of passers-by, she endured six long years of exploitation.
Age: Approximately 7 years old
Rescue location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Time in captivity: 6 years
Her small, fragile body bears the marks of her past - bruises on her neck from years of being chained, broken teeth, and signs that she likely gave birth during captivity. Though it's unknown if any of her babies survived, it’s unlikely given her skinny frame.
When she arrived at the JAAN sanctuary, Amel was severely underweight, dehydrated, and infested with lice and parasites. Despite everything she’s been through, Amel has shown nothing but gentleness and grace. She's passed her first TB test and is receiving treatment for her dental issues, skin and intestinal health, along with a nutritious diet to help her regain strength.
With a calm, affectionate nature, Amel is slowly beginning to heal. She spends her days basking in the sun, quietly grooming and being groomed by her closest companion, Meli. The two were rescued together and placed in the same quarantine space to ease their stress - Meli rarely leaves her side.
Because of her age and fragile condition, Amel will be among the first to begin socialisation. She’ll be gently introduced to a small group, where she'll need to build trust, confidence, and find her place in the monkey hierarchy. She will need to be closely monitored by the team to see if she will be able to survive back out in the wild.
Amel’s story is one of quiet resilience - and thanks to your support, her second chance Monkey Freedom Project Hub has already begun.
