Meet Mae Mayura

Blog

Discover Mae Mayura’s journey and how your support protects her future.

Mae Mayura’s life began in the forests of northern Thailand. As a calf, she was taken from the wild and separated from her mother - a traumatic experience for any elephant. She endured harsh training designed to break her spirit, followed by years of hard labor in logging.

When logging was banned, Mae Mayura was moved into tourism, where she gave rides, performed tricks, and bathed with visitors. Like so many elephants exploited for entertainment, she was denied rest, social bonds, and the freedom every elephant deserves.

Thankfully, her story changed. Today, Mae Mayura lives at ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary in the forested hills of Chiang Mai, Thailand - a sanctuary dedicated to elephant welfare above all else. For the first time, she can roam freely, forage, splash in the river, and stay close to her beloved mother, Mae Gorgae, who now shares this safe haven with her.

Mae Mayura is intelligent, cheeky, and fiercely independent. Watching her explore the sanctuary and interact with her mother is a reminder of what compassion makes possible.

Why your support matters

Mae Mayura’s past cannot be erased, and she still relies on sanctuary care to stay healthy and safe. Your ongoing support provides:

  • Nutritious food
  • Expert veterinary treatment
  • Enrichment and space to roam
  • Dedicated carers who protect her every day

Thanks to you, Mae Mayura can live with dignity and freedom, protected from harm. This is the life she was always meant to live.
