A tribute to legacy givers Dave and Janette
Blog
Janette and Dave’s daughter Jennifer shares memories of her parents' passion for animals, and why leaving a gift to our organisation was so important to them.
My parents were both great animal lovers and instilled in me from a early age the need for compassion for all animals. Dad, in particular, was very fond of bears and supported a number of bear conservation and rescue charities for many years.
It began on a holiday to Austria, where a local town parade included a captive bear. On our return, I was whisked off to the local library to help him translate into German a strongly-worded letter to the mayor of the offending town. I was all of eight years old and there was no such thing as Google translate back then!
It gives me great comfort to know that my parents' gift to World Animal Protection will help the animals my parents adored.
Mum and Dad loved to travel; whether it was pandas in China, elephants in Sri Lanka, orangutangs in Borneo or condors in Chile, destinations and travel companies were carefully researched to balance ethical considerations with the thrill of seeing a new species of animal.
On their return from their travels, I would sit through a show of thousands of photos, cursing the invention of the digital camera. I'd give anything now to see a new photo of a blurry zebra or a smudge which might be a tiger, and it gives me great comfort to know that my parents' gift to World Animal Protection will help the animals my parents adored.
