Mae Dok's story

Mae Dok was subjected to hard work in the logging industry and then spent years inn a tourist village where she endured constant crowds, long hours, and heartbreak – including the trauma of losing her calves, one of whom was taken from her as a baby to work in tourism elsewhere.

When her lifelong owner passed away in 2019, Mae Dok was finally retired to BEES Elephant Sanctuary in northern Thailand. She arrived thin, with aching joints and poor hearing from a lifetime of hardship.

But today, Mae Dok is living out her retirement in peace. She spends her days walking slowly through the forest, taking breaks to rest and snack on chopped banana trees - her favourite food. She’s inseparable from her best friend, Mae Kam, and her gentle, friendly nature has made her a favourite among the carers at BEES.

By adopting Mae Dok, you’ll help give her the care, comfort, and respect she deserves, every day of her retirement.
