Jean's story

Jean spent the first seven years of his life behind iron bars in a crumbling zoo in Romania. Confined to bare concrete, crammed in with his parents and brothers, he had no space to move, no grass beneath his paws, and no chance to just be a bear. Every day was a struggle for food and survival.

In 2008, everything changed. Jean was rescued and brought to AMP Libearty Bear Sanctuary – a peaceful home in the Romanian forest, where he finally found safety.

Today, Jean lives freely among the trees, far from the suffering of his past. He’s quiet, observant, and well known for coming out to see sanctuary visitors – always on his own terms. With his distinctive crooked nose and thoughtful nature, Jean is a favourite among visitors and carers alike.

By adopting Jean, you’ll be part of his journey – and help give other bears like him the second chance they deserve.

Why adopt Jean?

By adopting Jean, you’re helping give a once-neglected bear the life he was denied for far too long. Your support provides expert care, nourishing food, space to roam, and everything he needs to live safely and comfortably in the forest haven he now calls home.

But your impact goes even further. You’ll also help rescue and care for other bears still suffering in captivity - and support our global mission to end wild animal cruelty for good.

As part of an international movement, you’ll help to end the exploitation of wild animals – whether for entertainment, traditional medicine, farming, or profit. Together, we can create lasting change – by rescuing animals, challenging the industries that harm them, and transforming the systems that keep cruelty in place.

Adopt Jean today and help him heal - while supporting our work to protect bears from cruelty worldwide.
