Operation Orangutan is helping rescue baby orangutans from the illegal wildlife trade across Sumatra. Torn from their mothers, many are kept as pets, exploited for entertainment and locked away in cages.

Every year, more than one in ten orangutans disappear from the wild. With so few Sumatran orangutans left, each loss pushes the species closer to extinction.

Working alongside Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, World Animal Protection is helping provide rehabilitation, expert care and a future back in protected rainforest habitats.

Chocolate was stolen from his mother as she lay wounded and dying

Sold into the illegal pet trade, he spent years chained in a village - frightened, isolated and unable to live as a wild orangutan should.

After his rescue, Chocolate began his long rehabilitation journey. With expert care and rehabilitation, he relearned the skills needed to survive in the wild.

Four years later, Chocolate was released into a protected rainforest habitat in Sumatra. When rescuers opened his crate, he climbed straight into the trees.

Today, your support could help more orangutans like Chocolate get that same second chance...

A new beginning. A safe future. A second chance to live wild.

With our partners, we are providing specialist rehabilitation to help rescued orangutans rebuild their strength and relearn the skills they need to survive in the wild.

More than 1 in 10 orangutans disappear from the wild every year and with so few Sumatran orangutans remaining, every rescue matters.

Supporting Operation Orangutan does more than help one animal, it helps protect future generations by supporting long-term conservation work, safeguarding rainforest habitats and helping stop the illegal wildlife trade.

It is possible to give more orangutans the chance to return to the forest where they belong.

Together, we can help protect this critically endangered species before it’s too late.
