£30 could help support the phased closure of commercial captive lion breeding facilities.

In South Africa lions are cruelly exploited for financial gain, entertainment, hunting, and traditional medicine. In places described as lion farms or commercial captive breeding facilities cubs are torn from their mothers when they’re just days old and face a lifetime of exploitation.

Living conditions on lion farms are frequently reported as low welfare. Our investigation found a lack of fresh and clean drinking water, filthy, overcrowded enclosures with no shelter and minimal veterinary treatment.

Some lions are brutally slaughtered so their bones can be cleaned, exported, crushed and used in traditional medicine. Others are sold to ‘canned’ trophy hunting facilities. This refers to the hunting of animals bred in captivity, hunted for sport in small enclosures with no chance of escape. Shot many times by amateur hunters, lions often endure a horrifically slow and painful death.

With your help, we’re determined to stop lions suffering and give them good lives.

The government in South Africa have committed to ultimately closing down the lion breeding facilities and ending the commercial exploitation of lions. Help fund our work to ensure that the government stays true to its word.

Hanuni’s story: a lifetime of misery

Lion cub Hanuni was stolen from her mother straight after birth.

She’s being hand-reared by tourists who’ve been told they’re helping her prepare to go back to the wild. But this isn’t true.

When Hanuni grows too large to be handled, she’ll be sold to another lion farm. Just like her mother, she’ll be cruelly caged and forced to give birth again and again. We can’t let this cruelty continue.
