For years, Lion Mannie has lived alone at a theme park in the Netherlands, confined to an indoor enclosure with only a small outdoor passage. Deprived of the social bonds that are essential to a lion’s life, he has had no companionship, little stimulation, and has been surrounded by the constant noise of amusement park rides.

Born in captivity and rejected by his father, Mannie has never known the warmth of his mother’s care beyond infancy. Instead, he has been kept in isolation, with no contact with others of his kind.
