Bear used for bile in a cage

Countdown to freedom

Save bears today

With just over 200 captive bears remaining, the chance to end Vietnam’s cruel bile farms is almost within reach.

The countdown to end Vietnam’s bear bile industry is on.

Thanks to collaborative efforts by several NGOs and government authorities, there are now more bears in sanctuaries and government rescue centres than on farms in Vietnam.

Since 2005, we have seen a 95% reduction of bears on farms, when there were around 4,300 bile bears held captive on farms and facilities. This reduction is due to bear transfers (confiscations of illegally kept bears or voluntary transfers by farmers), but also, sadly, deaths of bears.

Your donation can help reduce the number of bears still in captivity in Vietnam.

Thanks to supporters like you, we’ve made huge progress against this cruel trade. Less than 20 years ago, 4,300 bears were being exploited on Vietnam’s bile farms.

Today that number stands at 226, and 40 of Vietnam’s 63 provinces are now free of bear farms. This is an incredible achievement, but those remaining 226 bears still need our help.

Will you help captive bears live a wild life?

Since 2006, in collaboration with authorities and our local partner, Education for Nature (ENV), World Animal Protection has been providing equipment and training for microchipping bears in Vietnam, introducing new cutting-edge microchipping technology in 2015, and working on an extensive monitoring programme of farms, which continues to this day.

Thanks to this monitoring, bears that are identified without a microchip and/or registration papers, deeming them illegal, are confiscated. They are then moved by authorities to government rescue centres or by Four Paws, Free the Bears and Animals Asia Foundation to one of their sanctuaries.

Donate now to help rescue bears from bile farms and end the brutal bile trade.
