Give bears like Maya a safe and happy home

Rescued bears are relying on you. Please help keep them safe, healthy and loved for life.

For over 200 years, bears in Pakistan were forced to suffer for entertainment. Cubs were stolen from the wild – their mothers killed. Their teeth broken. Their claws torn out. Nose rings forced through their sensitive noses.

Some were made to 'dance' on burning hot metal plates — jumping in pain to avoid being burnt. Others were tied to posts and attacked by trained dogs in brutal bear-baiting arenas so men could bet on them.

This was their life. But not anymore.

Today they are safe – because people like you took action. But they can’t survive alone.

Since 1997, World Animal Protection has worked alongside our local partner, the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), to shut down bear baiting and dancing in Pakistan. With stronger laws in place and fewer events being held, together we achieved what once seemed impossible: a future without bears used for entertainment.

64 rescued bears are currently living safe, peaceful lives at Balkasar today. Caring for these vulnerable bears is a huge task. After years of abuse, many suffer lifelong injuries — damaged teeth, chronic pain and trauma that will never fully heal. But they finally have a safe, forever home with all the care and support they need to heal, and acres of space and forest where they can live as naturally as possible.

They have survived unimaginable cruelty and now they deserve to live in comfort and safety, with the kindness they were once denied.

Please start a monthly gift today to help ensure they are cared for and loved for the rest of their lives.

Why your gift matters

A monthly gift allows us to plan for the future and help more animals.

When you start a monthly donation, you’ll join a passionate group of supporters who are determined to change the world for animals. World Animal Protection is working hard to stop the cruel exploitation of animals in the wild, animals in farming, wildlife trade and animals used in traditional medicine.

If you can spare even a few pounds a month, your kindness will help keep our vital work going and make a huge difference for animals worldwide.
