Whether you are looking to go totally plant-based or just switch out some elements of your Christmas dinner to meat and dairy free alternatives, there’s a real smorgasbord of options available this year.
The variety and number of plant-based foods available demonstrates the continued investment big UK supermarkets are making in plant-based foods, releasing a number of new, meat and dairy free options as part of their Christmas food offerings.
We round up the most exciting plant-based festive foods available in your local big brand supermarket so you can start planning your compassionate Christmas feast.
Waitrose’s centrepiece Christmas plant-based dish is a snazzy Vegan Jewelled Roast - a mushroom-based roast with caramelised onions and chestnuts and a layer of clove-spiced apricot, topped with more apricots, cranberries, sunflower seeds, crushed chestnuts and pine nuts. It also comes with 6 vegan No Pigs in Blankets as an extra treat. There are also options for starters and party foods too with Red Onion Bhajiswith Tamarind Dip, Sweet Potato Nibbles with Katsu Sauce or Plantlife: No Duck Spring Rolls.
Sainsbury’s have a range of plant-based Christmas food on offer this year. You can get the party started with a selection of light bites including No Prawn Tempura, No Chicken Kievs and Mini Black Bean Tacos. For the main event, there’s a variety of alternatives to the usual turkey dinner.
Fresh to launch this year is the Plant Pioneers No Gammon with Maple Glaze or you can opt for the Plant Pioneers No Turkey Crown, the Taste the Difference Festive Miso-Stuffed Butternut Squash or Nut Roast with Tangy Spiced Orange and Cranberry Glaze. There’s also a Plant Pioneers Vegan Trimmings Selection, so you don’t miss out on any of the extras, and a Chocolate and Salted Caramel Star for dessert.
As part of their Festive Food to Order Range, Tesco are making it super easy to go plant-based with their Vegan Christmas Dinner for 2 which consists of No Beef Wellington with roast potatoes, roast vegetables with thyme, vegan gravy, sage and onion stuffing balls, meat-free cocktail bangers and cranberry sauce with 2 Christmas puddings, a bottle of Champagne and 2 Christmas crackers.
You can also get the Wicked Kitchen No Turkey Roast Crown or Tesco Finest Sweet Potato and Red Cabbage Christmas Log. For pudding, you can choose from the Wicked Kitchen Spiced Rum Christmas Pudding, the Outrageous Orange Chocolate Festive Dessert or Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cake.
M&S are offering their biggest selection of plant-based festive foods this year with some fantastic options for a meat and dairy free meal. There’s the Plant Kitchen Vegan Beef Wellington, Vegan Butternut, Almond and Pecan Nut Roast, Vegan Turkey Roast and even a Roast Beetroot Bourguignon Pie.
There’s also a Plant Kitchen Vegan Selection Box (available via their Christmas Food to Order service), Cranberry & Orange Stuffing Balls, No Chorizo Pigs in Duvets and Vegan Duck Croquettes. For dessert there’s a Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding, Sticky Toffee Pudding, plant-based Mince Pies and more!
At Lid’s this Christmas you can choose from their Deluxe Mushroom, Butternut Squash and Cranberry Wellington, the Hazelnut, Cashew and Cranberry Nut Roast, or Vegan Sausage and Cranberry Wreath for the main event. If you only have a couple of people to cater for, Lidl also offer 2 individual Lentil, Red Pepper and Almond Nut Roasts.
Plant-based highlights from Aldi include their No Turkey Crown with vegan bacon, hand-finished Vegan Camembert Nut Roasts with cranberry sauce centre, and the Vegan Festive Wreath with butternut squash, chestnuts, cranberries and mushrooms, topped with candied orange and rosemary, with a cranberry glaze.
There’s also some essential extras – such as balsamic roasted sprouts and vegan gravy – and a Vegan Speculoos Cheezecake, Vegan Chocolate Torte Slices and Chocolate and Hazelnut Churros for that all important Christmas dessert!
At Asda you can get yourself an Extra Special Beefless Wellington, Vegan Cranberry and Chestnut Wreath or Extra Special Vegan Roasted Root Vegetable Tart for Christmas Dinner with a variety of plant-based Christmas accompaniments including cranberry and chestnut stuffing balls, red onion cocktail sausages and pigs in blankets.
And for a little pre-Christmas dinner appetiser, there’s Extra Special Vegan Crab Croquettes with Red Pepper & Roasted Garlic Puree. Plus, if you like a bit of cheese at Christmas, Asda have their very own Plant-based Cheeseboard this year featuring a range of vegan cheeses including cheddar, blue cheese, jalapeno and chilli cheddar, and Wensleydale and cranberry.
You can kick off Christmas with Morrisons’ Vegan Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese pots, their Best Mushroom St Jacques (mini filo pastry tarts with king oyster mushrooms and a creamy sauce) or Best Oven Roasted Mushroom Vegan Pate. It’s easy to go turkey-free at Morrisons too with The Best Vegan Beef-less Wellington, Plant-based Christmas Roasting Joint (with herb and onion stuffing and crisp herb crumb), Beetroot and Butternut Squash Tarts or a classic Nut Roast instead. You can finish off with a classic vegan trifle or Naughty Vegan Caramel Crunch Cheesecakes.
There’s a nice range of vegan treats and trimmings from the Co-op this year including Free From Mince Pies, Free From Choc Coins, Free From 6 month matured Christmas Pudding, Santa Truffles, GRO Ho Ho No Pigs in Duvets, and GRO Ho Ho Roots en Croute.
