Every year, thousands of pets in the UK suffer terrible stress from fireworks. Here are essential tips and what to do to ensure their happiness and safety.
Firework celebrations around the world
Humans love to celebrate with fireworks: Diwali, Bonfire Night, New Year's Eve, weddings, parties and birthdays - there are plenty of occasions throughout the year to light up the sky. This can be a lot of fun for people, however, the flashing lights and loud noises can cause stress and fear for many pets. Here are our top tips for reducing stress in pets during fireworks...
Dogs and cats
- Close all windows and draw the curtains to muffle the noise from outside. This will also block out the flashing lights.
- Turn on the TV or radio to mask the sounds (gradually increase the volume during the day, but not so loud that it would upset your pet).
- Make sure your pets are kept indoors before the fireworks start.
- Give cats and dogs plenty of spaces to hide.
- Reschedule your dog's walks to the daytime.
Small rodents (like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters)
- Bring your pet's cage/hutch into a quiet room. If you can't bring them inside, try a garage or shed.
- Give your small pet extra bedding or straw so they can hide and feel safe.
- You could cover the cage with a thick blanket to block out some of the lights and noises, but make sure to leave enough ventilation.
Horses and ponies
- To keep your horse calm, maintain a calm demeanour, as they can sense stress in humans.
- Fireworks should never be set off near horses - make sure to warn your neighbours beforehand.
- Try and stay with your horse when you know fireworks are being set off, so you can ensure their safety.
If your pet is easily frightened by everyday noises or suffers from anxiety, you may want to seek veterinary advice a few weeks before the fireworks season.
