Animal welfare successes in August

News

You helped us support animal welfare around the world in August 2022.

World animal protectors, here are your achievements from around the world. Thank you for your ongoing support 🧡

🐘 You asked for an end to elephant cruelty and exploitation in India

World Animal Protection India held a series of events in Jaipur to raise awareness about the suffering of wild animals used for entertainment, and to call on the Government of Rajasthan to end elephant rides and keep these majestic animals where they belong - in the wild.

🐷 You exposed how factory farming is driving climate change

Our latest report, ‘Climate change and cruelty’, analyses the environmental impact of factory farmed chicken and pork in four of the world’s biggest factory farming hot spots: the EU, Brazil, the US, and China. The report warns that continued expansion of factory farming will put the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement out of reach.

🦁 You called for an end to trophy hunting in South Africa

As South Africa opens consultation on its draft ‘Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity’ white paper, some of the world’s largest travel companies, including Booking.com, Expedia Group, and TripAdvisor have signed a joint statement to the South African government asking them to publicly commit to ending trophy hunting.

🔥 You called on Public Development Banks to stop funding cruel and unsustainable factory farming

Following the launch of our ‘Closing the finance gap’ report, we launched a supporter action calling on the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to stop funding new factory farms around the world. Public Development Banks have used at least US$4.5 billion of public money to support factory farming over the last ten years.

🐥 You promoted farmed animal welfare across Southeast Asia

The World Animal Protection Thailand team, together with Investing in Others, held a workshop which promoted chicken, shrimp, and farmed animal welfare amongst local organisations in Southeast Asia. Participants gathered from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand to showcase their projects, share campaign experiences, and inspire one another in the area of farmed animal welfare and our food systems.

🐑 You moved two Australian pension funds to exclude investments in live animal exports

Following the launch of World Animal Protection Australia's campaign this year, CareSuper and HESTA have announced live animal export exclusions from their sustainable options. For members of CareSuper (220,000 members) or HESTA (930,000 members) concerned that their hard-earned savings could be harming animals, there is now an option to exclude investments in live animal exports.
